      @@teatool6903 @superbarnie Shamisen player here! I wouldnt call the shamisen particularly more difficult than other instruments. The player here displays some insane skill thats for sure. The argument that every instrument that has no frets is immediately insanely difficult is nonsense. Yes, especially for people who started with a key instrument like the piano or a string instrument like the harp, where each string had a set tone, it can take some time to get the intonation right, but look at cellos, viola, double bass and so on...not impossible. And the bachi only gets difficult to hold if you use the wrong technique. It feels unusual at first, but also: no big deal after some practice. I usually dont like comparing instruments, because each instrument comes with its own technique and challenges.

    • @kupopoporo4447

    I feel like people always dismiss percussionists as having the easy role. "LMAO, you're just hitting stuff with a stick!" Watch that drummer, the absolute mastery he has over his instrument, how careful his movements actually are, listen to his dynamics. He is a true virtuoso. I don't care if you're listening to Japanese classical music, western classical music, or pop music, NEVER dismiss your percussionists. They can make or break the entire performance.

    • @maxsilva11
      @maxsilva11 Год назад +4

      Before the shamisen comes in, he is giving an absolute master class in how many diverse timbres and textures you can get out of a single drum. Listen for how differently the low resonating tone is or isn't ensconced in our masked by the higher frequency bands of noise. That first stage of the performance could have been many times longer and it would still have been far from boring.

    • @IronianKnight
      @IronianKnight Месяц назад

      Quick second year addition from a separate comment: The man played so hard that he literally broke his baton in the midst of this performance! He didn't miss a beat, instantly dropping the split wood and pulling out a prepared replacement... which implies that even with the best materials available, using this instrument for a prolonged performance is so physically powerful that it regularly splinters the wood in your fists, to the point that this is an expected eventuality and you train to *work around the limitations of physical matter* by instantly identifying the failure and accurately snatching a replacement.
      I just have to play it up, because that's some next level intensity. Further! I don't think everyone viewing knows how it feels to be in proximity of one of these drums during use- markedly different experience from watching a recording! The fact that this high level player has backup batons gives you a hint, though. You feel those strikes bounce the air in your freakin' lungs, my friends. All this on top of expert coordination and timing. You'll find that requirement for endurance and precision similar for most if not all styles of percussion, though I think Taiko may be one of the burliest of the lot.

      @James Franko Well, I have heard stories from Americans who have lived in Japan where they experienced some form of racism toward them because they were not Japanese. Either that's not true, which sounds unlikely to me because the people telling their story seem genuine, or they took the actions for racism while it isn't.

      Americans have so much to learn from your traditional way of life. I'm afraid that you have already learned everything that you can from us/ the west. I genuinely hope we will remain friends.
      You are such an industrious and hard-working people. Your country is small but you make up for it 1000x in willpower alone. With your spirit and our natural resources we could conquer all diseases, heartache and the rest.
